About NECA

What NECA Does
Local NECA Offices
Contractors in the electrical industry who belong to the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) are union contractors. There are more than 119 union signatory Sound and Communications contractors in Northern California. In the old days, being a union contractor might have been expendable. In these days, its a necessity for one simple reasonunion workers are better trained than non-union workers.
Managers and staff of the 7 Northern California NECA Chapters negotiate labor contractors with the IBEW. Representatives from the local NECA chapters, along with representatives from the IBEW locals (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) have developed state-of-the-art programs to train Northern California electrical workers through the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee. To help advise on this training program, many signatory contractors are active in the local Sound and Communications Training Trust of the JATC.
NECA was founded in 1901, just 22 years after Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. The National Electrical Contractors Association includes more than 4,000 electrical contractors worldwide. Members come from 188 U.S. chapters and foreign affiliates.
NECA members operate in the electrical sector (Standard Industrial Code 17301) and utility sector (SIC 1623). They are specialty contractors and oversee utility line work.
NECA and IBEW co-sponsor the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee formed in 1941, where more than 30,000 Sound and Communications technicians are trained. Click here to learn more about the NJATC.
What NECA Does:
Directed by its members, the NECA staff performs these key functions:
- Local chapter managers, assisted by staff from NECAs National Office and field staff, negotiate and administrate labor agreements with local unions of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
- At all levels, NECA staffers provide non-labor-relations type services to contractors, including detailed publications and workshops in virtually every aspect of the electrical construction industry.
- NECA publishes Electrical Contractor, the magazine of the electrical contracting business, and the Manual of Labor Units, the change order bible of the industry.
- NECA also sponsors the annual NECA Show, the only national trade show aimed at electrical contractors. Its held in the fall, in conjunction with the NECA National Convention.
- NECA is the co-sponsor of the Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC) to the electrical industry. This committee trains more than 25,000 electrical apprentices and is the sole source of significant in-service training for journeyman electricians.
- NECA has established the Electrical Contracting Foundation, using proceeds from an endowment that will soon top $10 million for research projects and products.
- NECA is also involved in many other industry projects, including National Electrical Safety Month, the Associated Specialty Contractors organization, co-sponsorship of the NEMA marketing Forum, and marketing at local and national trade shows.
